Partnering with you in your child's formation
A volunteer recently shared with me a story of her experience with a sweet young girl who lives in difficult circumstances.
The girl's family severely struggles financially and her parents endure many health issues. She has more challenges in her life than most kids her age. She was feeling discouraged.
This volunteer listened as the girl poured out her disappointment about her life. When the girl had finished, the volunteer asked her to think of one thing that she was thankful for in her life. It took a minute, but the little girl thought of something: her parents’ love for her.
When next the volunteer saw the girl, she poured out her discouragement all over again. The volunteer asked her once more to think of something she was thankful for in her life. This time the girl thought of more than one thing. In time, the girl had a list of things for which she was thankful. She would name them without being prompted. Her outlook on life was changing; she could see God's faithfulness.
Gratitude heals the soul. The circumstances in which the girl lived were out of her control. But God encouraged her through a habit of thankfulness. Gratitude helps us keep our focus on Him instead of what others may have. When we take a moment to be intentional about giving thanks to God in our lives, in the respite, we notice His love in our lives.
As a parent I don’t want my children to miss a daily reminder of His love. We can teach our children to see His faithfulness. We can encourage them to give thanks. What a beautiful way to honor the Lord in our daily lives!
