One of the things I love about my family is that, growing up, there was almost always a guest invited into our common life together.
Whether it was sharing a simple meal or hosting people who needed a place to call home for a season, my family was always open to the needs of others. It gave our guests a place to belong and be known. This value my wife and I have embraced for ourselves and we hope to pass on to our children.
As much as I value this for my family, as Christians, a culture of hospitality strikes to the core of who we’re called to be as followers of Jesus. We were once strangers, separated, alienated, and isolated from God and one another. Yet God in his mercy opened himself up to us. He invites us to know him as sons and daughters and to share in his eternal community of love.
This invitation into a life of love is true for us as individuals and true of us as the family of God here at Christ Church. When we gather to pray, sing, read scripture, and feast at the Lord’s table, we receive the hospitality of the Lord—his invitation for us to draw near and seek his face. In hospitality lies the beauty of the transforming work of grace in our lives. When we receive from the Lord we are changed, renewed, and equipped to live life together with the people of God, in the goodness of God.
This year has truly been a feast for us at Christ Church. God has provided for our church family in countless ways, reminding us of his faithfulness and provision.
As we close out 2016 and enter into 2017, we as the Christ Church family should warmly and intentionally reach out to those that are new or visiting with us. The clergy and staff have several exciting hospitality initiatives on the horizon, but I also encourage each of you to explore ways that you can respond today with hearts of gratitude and hospitality, giving freely just as we have freely received.
