I confess that each time I see someone post
on social media that we only have a small number of days until Christmas, it
strikes fear in my heart.
Why fear Christmas?
Honestly, because I am not good at the “waiting” thing. In fact, I am really
terrible at it. Through the entire season of Advent which starts four Sundays
before Christmas, I find myself bouncing between moments of prayer and panic
over my to-do lists and scheduled celebrations.
In our Anglican calendar, Advent is
supposed to be a time of expectant wonder and anticipation of the coming King.
When I picture a peaceful, faithful Advent with my family, it is beautiful in
my mind. But the reality seems beyond my grasp. What does waiting look like in
my daily life? How can I be intentional during a time of year when other
commitments and checklists tug me in different directions?
We must start simply.
Select a time for daily prayer with your children. Light the candles of an
Advent wreath alongside a Scripture reading. Participate as a family in a
spiritual discipline to further your walk of faith together.
Need some tools to help guide you?
Our Advent Fair is this weekend. On Sunday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Children’s
Chapel your family can make crafts that will help you walk through the season
of Advent. My family will be there—we hope you will join us.
