A Pew Research Study conducted from 2007-2014 noted that the percentage of “nones”—those who did not identify with any religious affiliation—in the American population grew from 16% to 23%. At the same time, those who considered themselves Christian dropped from 78% to 71%. Additionally, while young adults aged 18-29 make up 22% of the American population, they only account for 10% of total church attendance.
In short, it appears that Americans on the whole are becoming less and less religious, and the trend is amplified among young adults.
So how should the church respond? With hope. God is not surprised by these statistics. We do well to remember the words of the prophet Isaiah that I mentioned two weeks ago in my sermon of the Parable of the Sower: My word shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11).
The church is nourished by the effective Word of God. Our response isn’t to try harder, but to continue to be faithful and obedient to God.
If you aren’t a young adult, make a point to extend a welcoming gesture towards the young adults in our midst. Take an interest in their story. The 20’s and 30’s can be tumultuous years and the need for compassionate people willing to welcome and listen is crucial. Invite them into deeper connection and fellowship in the church.
If you are a young adult, we want to be part of your journey. Life is about more than just “getting through” this stage; we want you to thrive in your relationship with God and with others. We want to equip you to bring the Gospel’s message of hope into a generation that needs to hear it afresh. Wherever you are in your journey with God, you are welcome here at Christ Church. Find me in the Fellowship Hall after service or connect with us on our website for more information.
Let us continue to pray for this generation, that they would know the hope of Christ. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope (Romans 15:13).
