There is no security in the things of this world. There are no guarantees. Even mountains will eventually crumble. People will disappoint us; jobs go away; stocks become worthless; places of refuge will disappear. Who or what can we hold onto that will never change? Who or what we can rely on to always be there in good times and in bad?
The psalmist’s answer to that question is the Lord our God, who made heaven and earth and mountains. Our God—our guardian—never sleeps; he guards us day and night; he is always there to protect, guide, and bless us as his own.
Where do you want your strength to come from? Which would you choose to put your faith and trust in—mountains, money, people, or the Maker of Heaven and Earth? When we put our trust in Jesus, the Son of God, who lived among us to show us the way to everlasting life, we do not have to be afraid. We do not have to look to the mountains for strength or help. Instead, we look to the One who never slumbers or sleeps, who watches over our going out and coming in, now and forevermore.
Thank you, Lord, for being our Guardian God. Preserve us with your mighty power, so that we do not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity; through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Pilgrim’s Song (Psalm 121)
I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
He won't let you stumble, your Guardian God won't fall asleep. Not on your life! Israel's Guardian will never doze or sleep.
God's your Guardian, right at your side to protect you—Shielding you from sunstroke, sheltering you from moonstroke.
GOD guards you from every evil, he guards your very life.He guards you when you leave and when you return, he guards you now, he guards you always.
