In the hectic pace of the weeks leading up to Christmas, it can be difficult at times to immerse ourselves in fully observing Advent. This time of waiting and preparation seems to fill up without effort, shifting our focus, distracting us and pulling us in different directions.
But let me show you how, in a small but significant way, the Children’s Christmas Pageant creates a space for Advent in the lives of the parents and children involved.
Let's peek behind the scenes. At home, children are memorizing Scripture as they rehearse their lines. The choir is learning theology as they practice their Christmas songs. And the shepherds and the preschool sheep are trying on their costumes, a wearable reminder of what it was like to live and worship in the first Advent.
These little ones are learning the story of Christ by becoming the storytellers.
Unless you have a child in the pageant, you may not know that an equal number of volunteers are involved. During rehearsals, these parents and grandparents lovingly coach and pray for the children, helping them understand their roles and why their roles are significant. We get to see Advent through their eyes.
The pageant is a peaceful, beautiful—a little wiggly—and wonderful way for both children and parents to prepare their hearts for the arrival of God's Son. I get tears in my eyes as we hear the sweetness of these precious voices lifting praises on high, singing to the Lord. Every time.
And the pageant is just one of the ways that Children's Ministry partners with parents year-round to grow our children in their faith and help them to look toward Jesus. We are so thankful for the generosity of our church family that allows us to have the resources for these opportunities.
We invite you to continue investing in the faith of our children with your time, talents, and tithes.
