This weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day. God in His infinite wisdom created families and gave mothers a special role. A mother’s love is often sacrificial and life-giving. They give up time, sleep, and sometimes food. They awaken early in the morning to serve and their days seem to never end. They go above and beyond the call of duty to raise their children. And the same holds true of grandmothers and great grandmothers.
Many of us can recall people in our lives who give generously of themselves. Mother’s Day is a wonderful way to remember our mothers, grandmothers, and other women who have loved and mentored us in some way.
On this Mother’s Day, we are reminded also of the love and generosity of God who gave us His Son as our Lord and Savior. Jesus demonstrated an image of maternal love in His powerful metaphor which describes His care for us: “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…” (Matthew 23:37).
This Mother’s Day I give thanks to God for so many women in my life who loved generously, modeling God’s love. Because of them, we are so much more.
