Under the leadership of Krystal Hustead and with support from 60 volunteers, Christ Church is providing some 675 backpacks to underprivileged families in our community. This the culmination of weeks of planning and mobilizing hundreds of parishioners who came together to meet a very practical need.
“Glory to God for his provision,” said Krystal, who explained that God provided more than just backpacks and school supplies. “The backpacks come with a message of hope; there is a God who loves them and He knows their needs.” And because of our parishioners’ faithfulness, many of these families will know that Christ Church Plano cares about them too.
To say the least, this has been a project of love. Each Sunday for the past several weeks, Christ Church has been a hub of servanthood, many of us witnesses to a true spirit of generosity. This, no doubt, includes the Christmas in July event which saw Children’s Ministry lockstep with the greater Christ Church mission.
“Instead of giving gifts just at Christmas time, we wanted our kiddos to understand they can bless others any time of the year,” explained Rachel Brown. “In our Sunday School classes for Christmas in July, the kids were challenged to notice the blessings in their lives, and look for ways to love others through acts of service.”
That is why this past Sunday our fellowship hall was busy with our young ones; each one of them gathering boxes, sorting backpacks by gender and grade, and preparing them for delivery. Children’s Ministry intern Julia Pantleo said, “It’s a fun way to teach the children about God’s call for us to serve our neighbors.”
Let us pray these backpacks are received with the warmth in which they are given. Even more so, may the recipients of the backpacks know Christ Church serves them because of the love of Christ.
Hundreds of families receive support through Kids in Need through our relationship with community agencies like Allen Community Outreach, Assistance Center of Collin County, Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County, City House, For the Nations, HIS Bridgebuilders, House of Prayer, The Mission, Samaritan Inn, and Templo De Altisimo.
